Hello,
this is my first piece of furniture.
it's a small cupboard that I designed to be used as a jewish "aaron hakodes", or "holy ark". this is a cabinet -usually placed in a sinagogue- in which we store the tora scroll.
A close relative of mine hosts a synagogue in the summer time in his country home, and I offered to build the cupboard for him. it is quite short, under 6Ft, because it has to fit in a niche in the wall. built with maple plywood ( sides) birch ply (the door panel), solid maple (drawers, molding, stiles), and birch (the darker woods).
it is my first furniture piece (before this I built some plywood built ins, and some small projects) and although it is far from perfect and not really outstanding, I'm quite proud of it!
all joints are mortise and tenons, the drawers are jointed with my first ever dovetails and half-blind dovetails.
the inside is padded and covered in velvet, as it protects the tora scroll. (right now there are some books there, I think my wife just stuck them there while cleaning up!)
the design was much inspired by an article in pop. Woodworking which aappeared about a year ago. (was front cover as well).
comments welcome!
