This Chimney Cabinet is constructed entirely of salvaged shipping boards. The logo of the manufacture (IKO) is visible above the middle shelf and on the inside door stile by the lower hinge. The rough lumber was cut using a homemade bow saw. Then all the lumber was surfaced with a Stanley #27 transitional jack plane (1). The wainscot sides and back were planed using a Stanley #45 (4) combination plane. Their edges were created using a 5/8” Ohio # Match planes (2 & 3), as were the joints on the shelving boards. The door panels were raised with an E. C. Ring #33 round (5). The grooves in the doors were cut with a Trauts #46 plane (6). The mortises were hand chopped and the tenen’s cheeks smoothed with a 7/8 inch rabbit plane (not shown). The screws on the door hinges were installed using a Miller Falls / Greenfield helix screwdriver. Small trenails fastened the skirt and top to the sides. The power for the hand labor was supplied to a retiree by homegrown, organically grown vegetables.
