Shaker Dining Table

I made this Shaker table for our kitchen last year. All edges are radiused so as to contribute to the look and feel of never ending curves. They also add to the feeling of lightness I really like about this design. It is 35"x64", to fit in the space. It is made from 3 cherry boards. 2 beautifull 4/4 bookmatched boards 20" wide from Horizon Wood Products in PA were used for the top. The base was made from one 8/4 board. It was made with antique hand tools. The ends are held together with drawbored M&T joints. The 2 ends are held together with a shouldered bridal joint on the trestle. I used liquid and hot hide glue. I used a solution of hot lye to color and get the aged look I wanted. The base is finished with shellac, and the top with P&L #44 varnish, so as to hold up to the constant use it gets. Having no apron or low stretchers to get in the way, it is a very practical design.
