Shaker style bookcase, tiger maple

Shaker reading was limited to religion texts and practical instruction, so there aren't many Shaker bookcases to follow as examples. This one has an ogee profiled cornise whose side pieces are glued at the front but otherwise slide on dovetail keys for seasonal movement. The shelves are made from two biscuit-joined boards, the front board of tiger maple, the rear board of unfigured maple to save resources. The two upper shelves are backed by framed panels while the lower shelf is unbacked to leave room for odd-sized books and photo albums. Dyed and finished with an oil/varnish mixture, rubbed on with fine steel wool.
