Hi Everybody,

This was going to be a simple entertainment console. Initially, bottom shelf was going to have ventilation slots, but later on I thought I can do better than that. Doors were obvious targets for this change in design concept. After redesigning the doors with air intake slots, simple and straight lower stretcher was in need of following the doors somehow. This is the result.

It's 19" deep, 54" wide (top) and 31" high. Trim around the side panels and glass, as well as the handles are from the same piece of rosewood.

Then I put the "simplicity" behind and book-matched all of the cherry parts of the front. All of the case and door frame members are joined with loose tenons Top is made of two 12" wide boards. Only the ends are beveled, the rest of the edges received 1/8" radii treatment. Finished with many coats of hand rubbed oil-varnish mix.

The sides feature "bent" panel, following the shape of the legs. I haven't seen anything like it as in frame&panel construction, so in my mind it's unique. I am sure somebody else had done this before, though nevertheless, it's not commonly seen. If you've seen something similar, I'd like to know.

Thank You,

Hikmet C. Sakman "Chico"

Yes, you're right. It was cut and mitered, but each side at a different angle. Since following the grain was the "must" thing to do, it was a tedious operation with all that geometry.

I like the idea of bending the side panels out, following the lead of the front stiles. I can see that the figure of side panels is continuous and therefore from the same board but with such a clean angle, I'm guessing it was cut and mitered, or did you steam bend it?
Just curious.

And your air-venting solution became a very nice design solution.

Also, nice color control. I'm guessing this is a result of your bookmatching and otherwise reusing the same planks throughout - for matching pieces, etc.

Great piece!
