The bed in my sons room features one panel in the headboard and footboard.
The guest room bed has three panels.  If I had it to do over again, Id make the panels smaller.
I used Nancy Hillers method for finishing the qswo to make the ray fleck pop.  This was the first time Id used such an involved finishing process.  Analine dye, oil based stain, shellac and wax.

Last summer I started building two queen sized beds, incorporating Arts and Crafts elements.  I used quarter sawn white oak, using 6/4 thickness.  I resawed and sized the panels myself.  This was a very rewarding project, as we now have two heirloom beds that look great in the house. One for my son, the other for the guest room.  I learned a great deal about wood grain selection and placement.
