I am surprised by the endurance of a soap finish on bookshelves (Douglas fir) and a handrail (hemlock) that I own. The finish remains silky and durable enough for those uses. The soap I used in the first case was actually a shampoo and in the second case a liquid soap with quite a lot of glycerine. But, these are probably lighter finishes that are not compatible with much water, as far as I know.

The soap finish is a typical Scandinavian way of finishing furniture and floors. I buy a ready to use liquid soap with white pigments in, and the application is similar to a wax finish.
