Heres a small, fun-to-build project that works well as a night stand or side cabinet.
The original version, which ran in issue 211 of Fine Woodworking, was a bigger undertaking.
The case features through-tenon joinery, a dovetailed drawer and hand-hammered hardware. Its a great piece to show off some nicely figured quarter-sawn white oak.

Here's a small, fun-to-build project that works well as a night stand or side cabinet.

In brainstorming projects to teach at Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking, I pitched a scaled-down version of the display case featured in issue 211 of Fine Woodworking. Like a lot of Arts and Crafts furniture, the original case looks pretty simple at first glance, but is actually a beast to built (and lift!) So i wanted to come up with a project that incorporated the same details, but not the man-hours.

The result is a small cabinet that features through-tenon construction, a dovetailed drawer, a door frame with a built-in rabbet for a leaded glass panel and topped off with hand-hammered hardware. I made the glass panel, but left the hardware to Gerry Rucks in Warren, MI.

We ended up shooting it as a video workshop project for FineWoodworking.com as well. So if you're interested in giving it a try, stay tuned!

Nice design all around.
