Woodworker: Virginia BlanchardA big fan of Art Nouveau, Blanchard, 24, thought a screen would make a good piece for her first attempt at something Nouveau-inspired. “A decorative object executed in a decorative style. Perfect,” she says. This screen (80-in. wide by 75-in. tall) was also her first carving experiment. When carving the mahogany frame, she kept the look sinewy and slightly anatomical. The panels are primarily birch burl, with a patchwork of various other veneers used to create the wavy peacock-inspired pattern at the bottom. It is finished with shellac.
