A box made to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of an old friend rediscovered after 34 years.

Box: Sides - walnut, Base - ripple figured olive ash

Trays: Sides - figured maple, Base - Jarrah

Lid: Apricot with inlays of Ebony, Black Pearl Shell and Silver and on the reverse side Ebony, Jarrah, Coconut, Black Pearl Shell and Silver

Carved inscription based on the font Caeldera designed by Nate Piekos.

One inlay represents the parting and reunion of two people. The shape of the inlays and strings of silver dots are an abstraction of flying fish in the sun of the lagoon in Rarotonga and the drops of water that trail behind them as they leap.

the second inlay represents the blossoming of the recipient's life after reaching the age of fifty. The two inlays together contain fifty silver dots. The box contains the feather of Kahu, the hawk, a symbol of strength and courage for the way ahead.

In historical publications the use of these materials(in particular Jarrah and Ebony) are linked with desire and lust so it seems a peculiar selection for a 'friend'. I would be highly suspect of my wife receiving such a creation??? Perhaps more detail could have been used on the jewellery box for partner?

Too personal I think. A bit weird if you only just found your 'friend' again. Looks like something i'd expect my husband to design for me, not a long lost friend.
