‘Trestle’ Benches
Woodworker: Michael Cullen
In the earthquake of 1989, an old railroad trestle collapsed in Ferndale, California. Cullen bought some of the wood and made these benches. In pieces like these, he relishes the opportunity to emphasize the origins of the material. Initially, Cullen carved patterns into them, but didn’t like the result. He erased the carving with a power plane and kept going, creating the rough-hewn surfaces of the sides. He followed the power plane with hand tools and sandpaper to create the smooth, saddled seat surface.
