A treasure chest jewelry box I made for a friend who likes pirates.  The chest is made of quartersawn white oak that was fumed with ammonia to give it that natural aged look.  The trays are made of lyptus and lined with blue velvet.

The idea for my piece was generated by those old fashioned hexagonal or octagonal hardware store cabinets with many triangular drawers. The whole cabinet rotates. You might see one in an antique shop somewhere. I was fascinated by the idea and the possibilities that it had for all kinds of storage for small objects as well as it's visual content. So----there was part one: the mechanics of the structure. Part two was even more important: find a theme and try to put the two together to express an idea. I am also fascinated by the purely visual qualities of orreries, early scientific devices and all sorts of reliquaries, patent models and bizarre gadgets. Every artist has to discover sources of visual materials and objects that trigger ideas. There are some mysterious ways that these resources combine with imagination that I don't really understand myself---the main thing is to keep things going---ideas give birth to ideas and so on...I hope this answers your question.
