Q:
I recently rotated some of the cutters on my jointer’s segmented cutterhead. Now one of the rotated cutters is cutting slightly deeper than all of the others. What happened and how can I fix it?

A:
Most likely, sawdust or other debris got caught under one of the cutters while you were rotating it. Even a tiny amount of debris can cause one cutter to project farther than the others and take a deeper cut. To identify the cutter, place a jointed board on edge on the outfeed table so that it overhangs the cutterhead. Rotate the cutterhead by hand (unplug the machine first). The guilty cutter will lift up the board. Remove the cutter, clean it and its pocket, and then reattach it.
