Honing and Setting Jointer and Planer Knives is the latest DVD from Hendrik Varju and as with all his others (12 in all) it covers a lot of ground. Varju’s very first DVD was Jointer and Planer Secrets (2007) and it provided lots of info on the use of jointers and planers and how to mill difficult stock. However, it did not cover maintenance, knife removal, installation, set-up and honing. This latest DVD does.
The DVD starts with jointer and planer knives that just came back from a sharpening service. Varju shows that the large nicks have been removed but sometimes the level of grinding might have room for improvement. He shows you how to hone the blades to a higher degree of sharpness. Another chapter explains the proper relationship between the jointer bed and the height of the knives. The DVD then covers the cleaning and maintenance of the machines and goes into a very detailed chapter about installing jointer knives. The “bonus footage” included is about sharpening the blades while they are still on the cutterhead. Varju wrote an article for Fine Woodworking on the subject, “Sharpen Jointer Knives in Place” FWW # 224, Feb 2012 and provided an online extra, “Sharpening Jig for Planer Knives” but seeing the jigs in action is an added bonus,
At a little over 6 hours, Honing and Setting Jointer and Planer Knives provides a lot of important information, and as in his other DVDs you’ll learn the techniques in real time. Varju doesn’t cut out important steps so it’s like having “Private Woodworking Instruction in a Box”.

THIS WOULD BE REAL COOL. I have both & would appreciate more knowledge on how to do this the right way.
I have never been satisfied with any sharpening service and would appreciate information on bettering there sharpening results and jointer/planer set up as well. I have heard Hendrik Varju to be extremely thorough in all his DVDs. Looking forward to this one.
Allons-y!
I have owned a joiner for many years. I have never used it. I have no idea if it is set up correctly. I'm almost afraid to turn it on. I would love the DVD to see how I did.
changing jointer knives = un fun
Man, if anyone needs this, it's me. I desperately need to work on my planer knives.
I have learned to deeply appreciate sharp and properly adjusted tools. I would welcome the info and insight from this craftsman, resulting in better and more pleasing work
Count me in
Winner Winner
Yes please
I'd love to have the total lowdown on how to get my planer and jointer knives set right!
This would very helpful. I need to resharpen both the jointer and planer knives after passing a load of mesquite through them!
I'd rather get the helical heads on my machines, but since it's not in the budget, this DVD would make life easier.
Looks time just what i need!!
I'm in!
I would sure like to have these. They would be handy.
delighted to enter your contest.
Save me a lot of money on sharpening services .
Hendrik's DVDs are the bomb! Would love to have these!!
Count me in too please
Please let me win.
I would buy the DVD if it was cheaper, like 1/2. its just a little too pricey
I'm a new woodworker and I will like to know more about safeties ways experience from the masters that will help me and guide me on how to do it properly. I'll really appreciate to own one Thank you!
Ihave tried two times to sharpen my 6 inches jointer in 7 to 8 years, and its a very frustrating job. If I dont win the DVD I will buy it Wish me luck so I dont spent the money.
I have Jointer and Planar Secrets. Would love to have this one.
I am a newbe in woodworking, and i recently purchased an old Delta planer and old jointer, this book would be great to get my machines tuned-up
Another useful tool.
Strangely and surprisingly at the age of 59 yrars I discovered that I'm in deep love with woodworking, I consructed my small workshop in the back yard purchased hand and power tools and successfuly started to do some furniture starting with my workbench, router table and storage cabinet. It is very difficult to depend on other professional woodworkers to provide you with the right qualoty of jointed and planed workpieces that you need for your project. They are always not well worked in this country Saudi Arabia. This necessitate buying my own jointer and planer in the near future and as I do I will absuliutly buy this book.
Very useful info
Would be a great addition to my DVD library
Always love the new information I get from fine woodworking. Lots of great news to make my jobs easier.
Sitting here "at random" looking forward to commenting on the DVD training to sharpening my skills on sharpening my planer and jointer.
Honing and properly setting jointer knives is an art.
Perfect! I recently purchased a used jointer that had been sitting unused in an old woodworkers garage for a few years and it certainly needs work. Right now I'm uncertain on where to start or how to do what's needed to return if to peak performance condition. This DVD will be a very useful addition to my growing collection
Looks like a very good DVD. I always need to "Sharpen the saw".
Planner Knives, saw blades, scissors, so many things it will help with.

DVD looks good.
I have several of his dvd's and need any help I can get to set up my knives.
I have several of his dvd's and need any help I can get to set up my knives.
Sharpening and resetting those knives always presents a challenge to me.
Would make an awesome Christmas present to my self.
HONING ANYTHING IS A CHORE AND SOMETIMES ITS EASIER TO BUY NEW BLADES!
This is great, I can always use the help to sharpen well just about anything. With the gov shutdown and me in the military, I have to think multiple times before spending a penny.
I removed my jointer knives for sharpening. I'm having a dickens of a time getting the three blades re-aligned. Sounds like this DVD set is exactly what I need!
It seems like the pursuit of sharpening techniques never ends! I have (finally!) been spending a fair amount of time on woodworking with most of my effort lately spent building jigs, sharpening and adjusting and all the other background work. My 'new' jointer (a Craftsman 6" floor mount) is my newest 'toy' and it desperately needs to have the blades sharpened. I actually will probably buy a 2nd set, use the new set and then sharpen the first set for backup. Always more to do! This DVD looks to be a nice addition to my 'education'.
I had a small and very old joiner that I sharpened the blades on and tried to set them, it never worked very good after that. I now have a larger one that needs sharpening. It's also very old. I am about afraid to tackle that job again. Maybe the dvd would help.
I have an old planer/joiner that's pretty hard to setup and I hate the process, would be great to learn from a pro how to speed it up.
Always good to learn to work and to work to learn.
6 hours of video on that subject? Must have a lot to teach & share.

Count me in I really could use help with honing my knives Hendrik seems so knowledgeable.
I am in the process of putting a 7 inch rabbeting jointer together and certainly could use a DVD explaining how to hone the knives and set the jointer up for maximum performance.
I could use this. Need all the aid I can get for sharpening and especially setting knives in my Inca machine. The magnetic base jigs are great, but don't work with the aluminum tables on this machine. Yes, its old and Inca company is long gone, but the machine works great. Getting new blades is a hassle.
This would make a great gift from my wife to me!
Great! Over the years, and there has been many, my back always loves to change and sharpen my joiner knives. If only there was a video on how to carve new vertebrates for a old mans back
set-up is baffling to me. I would love to see how it's done by a pro
I could certainly use this.
Great videos, I enjoy as many as I am able to enjoy. I only have a cheap discount store planer so, new blades would definitely be a benefit. A DVD would be an excellent addition, as well as help me improve. A lot of time it's resort to the hand plane to get half a decent job done. Thank you folks for putting on a good website.
Sharpening and installing both jointer and planing knives is a challenge for me. First, not cutting myself and second, getting the knives perfectly aligned. I look forward to seeing the DVD.

Just last week instaled my Gotends 19" thicknesser in my workshop down here in the Peruvian amazon and I have around 8000 bdft of bloodwood, Ipe and a ton of other exotics to run through so this dvd would be a real help! thanks, Joe
Could definitely use this.
I could sure use this. This part scares me.
Would be nice to have. Still much to learn ...
Count me in. My jointer blades are in desperate need of sharpening and/or replacement, but I'm afraid to remove them since I don't know if I'll be able to get them back in correctly.
It'd be better if you could send Hendrik to tune up the machines for me, but the DVD would still be a great help.
Planer and jointer knives get a lot of use and occasionally hit knots. These two machines are workhorses in the shop and need to be kept true and sharp Any tips on how to make this chore faster, accurate and less frustrating would be a help indeed.
His tip on how to touch up knives in place was good, though I had to change it a bit to make it work on my jointer, but still useful. Thanks FWW.
An essential DVD set. The more precise the milling of stock, the easier it is to maintain precision in all the steps to follow.
Even I would learn something after 6 hours of video!!
Thanks for a chance to win
I could learn a lot in 6 hrs. I am constantly working on my planner trying to avoid snipes.
Another hat in the ring...
I'm never sure I've set up my knives correctly, until I try it out. Hit & miss isn't so great.

My shop has been in storage for 3 years due to a nasty divorce. I am looking forward real soon to get back to woodworking again. i need to sharpen my skills and every blade, so any help would be wonderful. Thanks.
I love video's like these. If done well, they provide that extra 3 dimensional viewing, up close and personal which really aid in understanding and learning. I find that every video I watch have helped to take my woodworking to the next level.
I look forward to hearing more about this video.
would make a great addition
