French Polish an Ukulele
Vijay Velji
2013. $29.95. 30 mins.
RichardZ is the lucky winner.
After Vijay Velji, of Shellac Finishes, released an earlier DVD, French Polish Like a Pro, he got a lot of inquiries from folks about finishing musical instruments. In French Polish an Ukulele he shows you how.
In this DVD Vijay says that French polishing a stringed instrument is a bit different from what you need to do to furniture and he explains these differences, but the four basic steps remain the same: Prep, Pore Filling, Bodying, and Burnishing. He shows you these steps in the DVD (with a background of some really nice, soothing music) and at the end of the 30 minutes he has a beautifully finished Ukulele. Vijay explains the different pads he uses throughout the finishing process and shows how he charges them with shellac, or alcohol, or mineral oil and the reasons why. At the end of the DVD Vijay also provides the viewer with a material list and shellac solution recipes.
Even if you don’t have a Ukulele to finish, French Polish an Ukulele would be a handy DVD to have. Vijay makes the process look easy and the four basic steps can be translated to furniture.
The lucky winner of the DVD is RichardZ. His comment was chosen at random.

I would love to learn French Polishing techniques.
This would be a great DVD to have. I have a Ukulele project I'd like to finish like this.
I just finished a soprano uke rebuild and I would very much like to know what I could have done better on the finish.
I just refinished a 100 year old round oak table and wondered as I rubbed out the poly finish what it would look like, and how it would wear with a French Polish? How could finishes other than shellac benefit for the French Polish techniques? Is French Polish similar to the shiny black finishes on grand pianos? I would like to see Vijay Vilji's DVD and try to learn from his experiences.
Looks like a great DVD!
Shouldn't the title be "French polish a ukulele"? The use of "an" in the title seems awkward to me. I thought the rule is that you use "a" before words that start with a consonant sound and "an" before words that start with a vowel sound. I'm referencing the American pronunciation of the instrument as "you-kah-lay-lee", rather than those who pronounce it "ooo-ka-lay-lee".
This sounds like a very interesting and useful program.
Applying a French polish finish is a bit mystifying to me, so Vijay's DVD would help immensely!
Why not
Sounds like a great DVD.
I would be so excited to win this video. I have built one ukulele and would love to French polish the next one I build!
I have done French Polishing on a pair of side tables using Vijay's article on FWW but seeing a video of those techniques would be so much more valuable!
Would love to learn the process to use on a guitar. Count me in.
so many techniques for us beginners to learn
Ukulele, whats that? French Polishing now were takling.
A French Polish can be used on so many things.
French polish is a great finish.
I have been mystified by French Polishing since it was taught to me as a younster. Now, nearly 50 years later, I still find it to be as mystifying as It was way back then.
