Walnut 4 drawer dresser
comments (6) October 18th, 2009 in Reader's GalleryThis was my first attempt at anything more complicated than a coffee table or cigar box. I've been contemplating something more complex for some time now and when my wife told me she was pregnant with our first son, I thought what better way to mark the ocassion than building what could be a family heirloom one day. It currently resides in our sons nursery as a dresser and change table. It was a blast to design and build and I'm sure there's a matching nightstand somewhere in that pile of leftover lumber too.
I got the idea for the dresser from a set of free plans I found on the internet and while the plans gave me a good idea of how much wood I'd need, nothing other than the width of the dresser stayed the same. I added a fourth drawer for more storage space and height, used mortise & tenon for the cross braces and tongue & groove for fastening the legs to the side and back panels, finger joints for the drawer construction and finished it with varathane and bee/carnuba wax. I also added some soft closing full extension drawer slides.
The walnut was scrap from a pile of shorts at a local lumber store. Let me tell you that milling these planks to size and shape was no small challenge. There were more dog legs and knots than you could shake a stick at.
Thanks for looking and commenting too. Cheers. I'm at Knot forgotten on facebook if you'd like to see more of my work.

Take my advice and start building now. Not only will the dresser take up more time than you think, but you're wife will not want you "tinkering" around in the shop all day when she is eight and a half months pregnant and there is a nursery to be prepared. Congratulations on both impending accomplishments.
